June 2009
A meeting of Winteringham W.I. was held on Thursday 18th June 2009 in the Village Hall. Chris Wood welcomed 28 members and 5 guests and asked everyone to stand to sing ‘Jerusalem’.
The minutes of the meeting on 21st May were read through and signed as being a true record. There were no matters arising from these minutes that needed attention. Members were told that Carol Cook had been co-opted onto the committee and that she had agreed to be the W.I. rep. on the Village Hall committee.
Correspondence received was dealt with and items of interest from the Federation Newsletter were noted. Lists were circulated for the outing to Waters Edge in August and also for members helping with teas at the Open Gardens Event on 9th August and ‘lending items’ for display on the W.I. table
The treasurer gave a report on finances
The president Mrs Chris Wood then handed over to our speaker for the evening – Mrs Sandra Clayton who showed slides and told the ladies about the history of Winteringham.
Sandra explained that she had gained a lot of her knowledge from her father and also from local historian Rex Russell. She went on to enthral the ladies with her knowledge of the village, it’s origins, the industries in past times and the people & events.
Sandra amused the members with her stories about Cock Fighting and riotous behaviour at Gate End and also tales of Winteringham Show which was traditionally held in July. The first train into the station had arrived in July 1907 probably to correspond with the day of the show.
As she showed slides all around the village Sandra recounted the history of buildings and the streets, matching old photographs with new.
Eventually time ran out but the ladies expressed their wish that Sandra returned at a later date to continue her story of the fascinating history of our village.
Christine Hammond gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the ladies. The hostesses: Ann Carnaby, Fay McNeil and Christine Hammond served everyone with a welcome cup of tea or coffee.
The draw for the Mystery Parcels given by Ann, Fay & Barbara Ashton took place. Winners were Sandie Johnson, Val Hayton and Margaret Knowles.
The competition for An Old Photograph was judged by Sandra Cayton 1st Jenny Pike, 2nd Jean McAvoy 3rd equal Helen Ogg and Val Hayton.
Next meeting is Members Night on 16th July.
