The President then announced the arrival of the speaker, Ivor Akester, whose subject was 'Lincolnshire Dialect'. For the first half, in his role as a farmer, Ivor strode in, resplendent in bowler hat, smart tweed jacket, gaiters and carrying a gnarled stick. Beginning with a fine rendition of 'To be a Farmers Boy' Mr Akester kept us laughing with a series of humorous poems by Edward Campion, Bernard Gilbert, Edith Spilman and Mrs Burgess - the latter a well known dialect speaker and stalwart W.I. member.

After a well deserved break for refreshment, Ivor appeared as a labouring lad in waistcoat, belt and braces with 'yocks' of binder string keeping his trouser bottoms out of the mud and preventing vermin from running up his legs! Further poems and anecdotes about his upbringing with his dialect speaking grand-parents followed, bringing home to us all just how much country life and people have changed in the last sixty years. We joined him in singing well known songs from the period to conclude a most enjoyable evening spent with a highly recommended knowledgeable entertainer.

Christine Hammond offered our hearty thanks for a very happy event.
