April 2009
A meeting of Winteringham W.I. was held on Thursday 16 April 2009 at 7.30pm in Winteringham Village Hall. The president, Mrs Christine Wood, welcomed 25 members and apologies were recorded from those not present.
It was agreed that the minutes of the previous meeting were a true record and matters arising were discussed. Mrs Wood announced responsibilities accepted by committee members following the AGM last month.
Correspondence was dealt with and the Federation newsletter for April was circulated.
The president then extended a warm welcome to our speaker, Jan Martin, whose talk was entitled 'My Life with Olive'. Jan gave us a very entertaining and thought provoking insight into living with an artificial hand and forearm - her good friend Olive.
Having been born without her right forearm Jan was labelled a 'deformed' baby, but her parents were determined that she should live a normal life, doing all the things that children normally do. Her mother visited school on many occasions to insist that Jan be included in activities which were thought by her teachers to be impossible for her, though when excluded from swimming lessons because she 'would never be able to swim' Jan declared herself perfectly happy to sit in the school library instead of going to the pool, as she had been swimming since the age of four.
Jan brought examples of artificial limbs, including a number made for children and demonstrated how Olive fitted onto her upper arm. She also brought examples of her beautiful hand made lace and embroidery.
Christine Hammond gave a vote of thanks on behalf of the members.
Hostesses were Marianne Ogg, Yvonne Ogg, Josie Ogg and Nancy Corney. They also provided the Mystery Parcels which were won by Mary Christoffersen, Nancy Corney and Marianne Ogg.
The competition for a Beautiful Bracelet was judged by the speaker and won by: 1st Christine Wood 2nd Christine Hammond 3rd Heather Bateman
At the next meeting on Thursday 21 May the speaker will be Lily Betts on Tudor Flowers and the competition a Small Posy.
